Grade level and subject area The students are in grades 9-12 and the area of instruction is Health. A brief description of the lesson This lesson will introduce to the students the concepts of Weight Management and Eating Disorders. The learning outcomes, skills, and content area objectives or standards the lesson will address National Health Education Standards NPH-H.9-12.1Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. NPH-H.9-12.2Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and health-promoting products and services. NPH-H.9-12.3Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks. NPH-H.9-12.4Students will analyze the influence of culture, media, technology, and other factors on health. NPH-H.9-12.5Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health. NPH-H.9-12.6Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision-making skills to enhance health. NPH-H.9-12.7Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
The steps of the lesson including the problem you will pose to students and an explanation of how the problem is relevant to your students. Students will be asked to assess their own eating habits by maintaining a diet journal for a one week period. In their journal the students will also record any emotional stresses that may occur as a means of determining what, if any, outside factors influence their eating habits. The students will need to become aware of the nutritional value of foods and the balance between physical activities and proper body weight. They will study the growing trend of obesity in children and the health problems that result from being overweight. They will learn about Body Mass Index (BMI) and determine what their own ideal body weight should be. They will also discuss eating disorders and food related illnesses. As a project, the students will be asked to select an appropriate topic from this unit and create an project representative of the material under study. Students today are often in charge of their own dietary choices and they need to know how important it is to eat the proper foods. The long term results of poor food choices will have negative results on their physical appearance and health. I believe that the importance of weight management and eating behaviors is of relative importance to all students today. How students will use technology during this portion of the PBL process Students will use the internet for research purposes and will be encouraged to use the science-based web search engine SCIRUS, as well as other valid search engines to provide documentation for their projects. How you will customize the activity for diverse learners in your classroom Students will work in groups of three to four students, the members of each group will be selected as I best determine. How you will assess student learning as a result of this lesson Student assessment will be based on the process that goes into the development and production of the product, and more importantly it will be based on the final product itself.
Robert, This sounds like an interesting project! Have you thought about allowing the students to keep their food diary in a blog format? Maybe from their research they could create an health eating plan or program of exercise based on the research they found. Kathryn
Robert, I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and an overactive thyroid. I have become a nutrient fact reader which has helped me in controlling my carbohydrate intake. I also thought Kathryn’s idea about putting the information in a blog format was a great idea.
I love the focus of your project; the lack of healthy eating habits in our society is tied to so many illnesses! I was wondering if you had considered tying the students' eating journals more directly to their research and reports; for example, if they have a current diet high in sodium intake, they would choose between either hypertension/high blood pressure or kidney failure. In this way, student groupings could be formed around their current eating habits and would have more significant implications on their own choices.
