10-28-2010 Grade level and subject area
The students are in grades 9-12 and the area of instruction is Health. A brief description of the lesson In this lesson my students will begin working within the field of digital storytelling. Digital storytelling is the process of sharing digital media through the use of video, narration, animation, text and still photos. The students will be asked to create a slide show using a series of photos accompanied by their own narration, which depicts what they perceive to be healthful living. Software downloaded free of charge from the internet will allow students to be able to record voice, still images, and music, and then mix and enhance their production into a slide show presentation. The students will be encouraged to use as much free thinking as possible to create their projects. When the project is completed, it will first be presented in the classroom and then it will be posted for presentation on our school wiki. To provide additional guidance for the students, a teacher created rubric will be given to the students. On this rubric I will list the evaluative criteria which will be used for assessment and adherence to the stated standards.
The Steps of the Lesson The students will work in pairs to create a 3 - 5 minute presentation on the process of staying healthy as they mature. The presentation will consist of a series of still photos with narration providing details of living a healthy lifestyle from your youth to your retirement, with music if desired. In working through and completing this problem-based learning project the students will be showcasing their ability to demonstrate the acquisition of content knowledge. In the initial step, each grouped pair of students will meet to discuss and create a general outline for their project. The next step will be for the students to begin taking the still photos that they will include in their project. The majority of photos will probably be taken off of school grounds, during non-school hours. The students will be given a two-week period of time to complete this part of the project, this also includes the selection of photos to be used in their presentation. The next phase will be using Audacity for mixing in the sound elements, the students will have one week to complete this portion of the project. Windows Movie Maker will be used to bring all elements together into their final product. They will also have one week to complete the final step of this project.
What digital tools will be used? The students will be allowed to use their cell phone cameras, or if necessary, I can loan out a digital camera. The students will be using the software program Photo-brush, which allows image editing, photo retouching, enhancing and a color correction program, it is relatively simple to learn, and the tutorial program is easy to follow, it is available at http://www.mediachance.com/digicam/. For audio, both voice and music, familiarity with Audacity makes it the logical choice, live audio is easily converter into digital recordings, as is recorded music. There are also many other similar programs that are freely available at http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/25-free-digital-audio-editors/. Windows Movie Maker will also be used; it is free and easy to access.
The learning outcomes, skills, and content area objectives or standards the lesson will address National Health Education Standards
NPH-H.9-12.1Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.
NPH-H.9-12.2Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and health-promoting products and services.
NPH-H.9-12.3Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.
NPH-H.9-12.4Students will analyze the influence of culture, media, technology, and other factors on health.
NPH-H.9-12.5Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.
NPH-H.9-12.6Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision-making skills to enhance health.
NPH-H.9-12.7Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health. How student learning will be assessed as a result of this lesson Student learning will be assessed initially by monitoring the students as they work through the process of creating their presentation. This is the first time digital tools are being used by the students, so the criteria for adherence to the listed objectives and standards on the student’s rubric will be loosely enforced. More importantly, the presentation of the slide show and its originality, the combination of still photos, narration, and music, the overall enjoyment of the presentation will be a strong factor in my evaluation. How you will manage the development and sharing of the digital stories As there are only two classroom computers the students will work on their projects on a rotating basis until all projects have been completed. Once completed the projects will first be presented in the classroom and then be posted onto our school wiki.
